Meet the founder

Movement gave Kayla her life back. Now she’s giving it forward.

How chronic illness led Kayla Hawthorne to Pilates, and Pilates led her back to herself: the founder of Poise & Power, in her own words.

Certified Pilates instructor · certified personal trainer · certified in nutrition

In her words

After being diagnosed with lupus, I experienced chronic pain, inflammation, fatigue, and a profound loss of confidence in what my body was capable of.

Traditional fitness spaces no longer felt like they belonged to me. They were often overwhelming, intimidating, and disconnected from the reality I was learning to navigate.

I turned to Mat Pilates videos at home, and something began to change. Slowly, I rebuilt my physical strength, but I was also rebuilding something deeper: my confidence, my identity, and my trust in my body.

Pilates became more than movement. It became a practice of patience, healing, and empowerment. And when I experienced that transformation for myself, I knew I wanted to share it with others.

That desire led me to become certified in Pilates. As I began teaching, my passion only grew. Watching my students become stronger, more confident, and more connected to their bodies, and having the privilege of celebrating every step of their journey, reminded me why this work matters so much.

But my own journey also taught me something important:

Wellness is bigger than Pilates.

Pilates gave me the foundation to reconnect with my body, but strength training, proper nutrition, recovery, and mindset are all important pieces of becoming and staying strong and well.

That understanding led me to become a certified personal trainer as well.

I don’t believe you have to choose one form of movement over another. I believe your body deserves what it needs.

That belief is at the heart of Poise & Power.

The name

When I look back over my life, two words consistently describe the woman I have worked to become: Poise and Power.

  1. Poise represents the ability to move through life with grace, confidence, and intention.

  2. Power represents strength, not just physical strength, but the courage to believe in yourself, adapt, persevere, and keep moving forward.

Those two qualities became the foundation of my own transformation. And they became the inspiration behind Poise & Power.

My vision is to create more than a Pilates studio. I want to create a wellness space where you can breathe, move, build strength, nourish your body, reconnect with yourself, and become more confident in what you’re capable of, without judgment and without feeling like you have to navigate your wellness journey alone.

Whether you’re returning to fitness, discovering Pilates for the first time, looking to build strength, wanting guidance with nutrition, or simply ready to make yourself a priority, you belong here.

At Poise & Power, wellness is personal. Our goal is to provide accessible, supportive, intentional, and empowering experiences that meet you where you are and help you move toward where you want to be.
